Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list on Saturday, August 15, following a collision in Friday night’s 3-1 win over the New York Yankees. The incident occurred in the sixth inning when Guerrero, sliding into third base, was struck in the head by the knee of Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr. during a defensive scramble involving errant throws.
Guerrero scored the tying run after the play but appeared dazed and was immediately removed. Manager John Schneider reported that Guerrero had “a bit of a headache” postgame and felt similarly Saturday morning. He underwent full concussion protocol testing. At the time of the injury, Guerrero was batting .263 with seven home runs and 46 RBIs.
The 7-day concussion IL allows for a potentially shorter absence than the standard 10-day IL, but activation depends on Guerrero clearing all medical protocols. Charles McAdoo replaced him at first base Friday and was expected to start Saturday. The Blue Jays recalled outfielder Daz Cameron from Triple-A as a corresponding roster move.
Guerrero, a six-time All-Star, had recently returned from a hamstring injury. The Blue Jays, competing in the American League Wild Card race, will monitor his progress closely. Concussion recoveries can vary, and the team emphasized caution driven by medical staff.
